AUDITION FACTS: All students must audition before registering. Not all students will qualify.
Auditions are played before a panel of orchestra staff.
Following are audition requirements for each group.
Prelude Strings students must:
Have 1 year minimum experience.
Be able to read music.
Be able to play a 1-octave scale of their choice.
Play a solo piece that best demonstrates their ability.
Be able to sight-read a simple melody in 1st position.
Intermediate Orchestra students must:
Have 2 years minimum experience.
Winds and Brass: play 2-octave major and minor scales, up to 4 sharps and flats.
Violins: play 2-octave D major scale and the relative minor.
Violas: play 2-octave G major and the relative minor.
Cellos: play 2-octave D major and 1 octave of the relative minor.Basses: play 1-octave D major scale and the relative minor.
Play a major solo from the repertoire for their instrument, excluding band and orchestra parts.
Consult with their music teacher for appropriate music.
Sight-read from the coming semester's repertoire.
Symphony of the Canyons students must:
Have 5 years minimum experience.
Winds and Brass: play 3-octave scales. Note: any major and minor scales can be requested by the audition committee.
Violins: play 3-octave scales in all major or minor keys.
Violas: play 2-octave scales in all major or minor keys.
Cellos: play 2-octave scales in all major or minor keys.
